Close Call
I was sitting in math, my second to last class of the day, when my phone viberated. But it wasn’t only my phone, everyone else phones went off. Then someone announced a message over the intercom, “Please check your phones. It’s an important message from the government.” I pulled out my phone while watching others do the same. I looked at my screen, pulling up the text. It read: “Please send your information back to this number.”
I furrowed my brows and looked around at my classmate. They seemed confused also. Then my phone viberated again, once again the government sent another text. This message was more informed. “Please send your information back to this number. The scientists say that they might have discovered a new disease, and if you don’t send your information you could get it faster, that is if you don’t already have it. They have cure and want to make everyone better. Please reply, we will call you if you need to be checked.”
The end of the message scared me, but I still sent my information. “Sage Miller, Age: 16, Female, Weight:120, No allergies, No serious injuries.” Then I pressed send. My heart was kind of racing. Why was I scared, I’m healthy and I know it. Then my phone rang.
“Hello?” I said, my voice shaking like crazy.
“Hello,” A few seconds of silence passed, “Is this Sage?” The voice on the other side sounded almost robotic.
“Yes...” I said slowly. A million thoughts were running through my head, but the one that kept repeating was, I’m sick... Great. My heart was pounding and I was sweating a lot.
“Okay, Ma’am. We need you to meet us tomorrow morning at our main office building, 6:00 am sharp. NO exceptions.” The voice was so demanding, but friendly at the same time.
“Okay.” I said scribbling the information they just said on a paper.
“Okay see you then ma’am, bye.” The other end hung up before I could say anything.
I looked at my phone the caller ID was unknown. I was reading the text they sent over-and-over again, then I remember I was in school. I slowly looked up at my class, they were watching me, I quickly looked down at my paper work. My teacher then resumed the lesson, and in the corner of my eyes, tears started to build up. I quickly wiped them away and tried to focus on the lesson.
The next morning, I got up at 5:00 am and instead of getting ready for school like usual, I got ready for my interview. I dressed in a nice dress and headed out the door. I got into my car and pulled out of my drive-way.
I pulled up to the main government building 15 minutes later. I took a deep breath before getting out of my car. “It’s okay there’s nothing to worry about.” I thought to myself as I stepped out of my car. Walking up to the building I just kept repeating, “There’s nothing to worry about,” to myself. Another deep breath as I opened the doors and entered in to the building.
“Hello miss, how may I help you?” The front desk person said, not taking their eyes off of the computer.
“Um... I have an appointment at 6:00.” I said, my voice shaking a bit.
“Name?” They asked looking up from the computer.
“Sage Miller.” I said. They immediately started typing again.
“Alright...” they said pausing reading the screen, “oh...’ another pause. “Come with me, please>” they said smiling, standing up and heading down a hall. I chased after them, they didn’t say anything as we walked. Eventually we came upon a room where a lot of people were waiting in line. “Just wait here miss. They’ll have you in and out in a minute.” Then the front desk left.
I awkwardly went and stood behind a teenage boy. Everything seemed to be going well. Every so often you could hear a muffled voice but nothing bad. After about 20 of waiting in line, the boy in front of me was up next. After about 2 minutes of waiting I could hear them yelling, then security drug him out in hand cuffs. The person that was watching over the line stepped in front of me and asked me to move away from the hallway. I was still watching the boy struggle in the grips of the security, then the person forcefully pushed me out of the hallway.
“Please stay back ma’am.”
“Sorry.” I said stepping back more. I think that they could see that I was scared.
“Don’t worry ma’am, that’s what they’re checking for. The disease effects the brain, you get a short temper, and can’t follow simple directions.” They said is as if this weren’t a big thing to be worried about. After a few more minutes of waiting the interviewer came back.
“Sage Miller, you’re up.” They seemed scattered, but still able to keep it together.
“Okay.” I said smiling the fakest smile I'd ever faked. Once we got into the room and got ‘comfortable’ we started with the questions.
“Okay Sage, I am going to ask you some questions, and I want you to answer them truthfully, ok?” The interviewer said as we had become good friends in the last two minutes. I nodded and they continued. “Ok first of all, so you know why you’re here?”
“Yeah, it’s because of the disease.” I said and they nodded
“Would you always follow your government? Or in other words would you always be loyal?”
“No, and what does this have to do with the disease?” I thought and was about to say it when I remembered the boy being handcuffed and said, “Yeah of course, our government knows everything.” The interviewer got the biggest grin on his face I had ever seen.
“Okay we’re done here. Thank you, Sage, for coming in.” The interviewer got up and shook my hand then walked me out of the room. I had to find my way out of the building, which was confusing because everything looked the same, and to my house.
The next couple of months were normal... well as normal as they could be with this new disease going around, plus the scientists created an alien species. According to the billboard the aliens are supposed to be great house keepers. It was summer so of course school was out and I had a full-time summer job so I was always gone so... one thing led to another and I got an alien.
Once it came, I read the instructions, it said that they need to be fed twice a day or they would die, and all was good. My house was always nice and clean, but one morning I had slept in and was late for work. I jumped out of bed and ran out of the house not even thinking about my alien. When I got home that afternoon my house was kind of trashy, then I remembered the alien. I ran around my house trying to find my alien. I passed the kitchen and inside was my alien, sitting on the ground, looking kind of sick. I looked back on that morning and remembered I hadn’t fed him.
“That’s probably why my house was trashed, it was hungry and looking for food.” I thought to myself. “Come here buddy.” I went to help it up, but when I grabbed his arm, something caught my eye. My alien had human skin.

Student's Choice Reflection
1. List one thing you've learned from writing this paper that you have applied to other writing assignments.
1. List one thing you've learned from writing this paper that you have applied to other writing assignments.
- I learned that the more detail you put in it the better the story.
- I had writer block which was really hard to overcome but with the help of my teacher and reading other Dystopian stories I was able to finally get over it. I learned that even if you have a hard time just keep trying.
- It fits the Dystopian genre because I wrote this during the dystopian unit in Creature Writing.
- I would add more detail and explain what happens during her interview.
- I included this paper because it was one of my stories that I was really happy with. I want you to learn that I have a creative mind.
